Three Song Shuffle – 2/2/07

Out of 800+ songs – these three songs emerged after hitting the shuffle button on my Rhapsody music player:

"Death’s Black Train Is Coming"
Gob Iron
Death Songs For the Living
(Transmit Sound/Legacy Recordings)

Does Jay Farrar ever slow down?  Apparently not – since he decided to
collaborate and record a bunch of old folk tunes with Anders Parker.  This song in particular is dark in nature –
something that Jay Farrar has a tendency to gravitate towards.

I like what the pair has done here with this tune.  It was originally written by the Reverend
J.M. Gates
, who according to Wikipedia, was "an American
Christian preacher and gospel music singer".

"I Met Jesus In A Bar"
Jim Lauderdale
Country Super Hits, Vol. 1
(Yep Roc Records)

The last place I’d expect to find Jesus would be in a
bar.  But if Jim says he did, well then I
am going to believe him.  After all, Jim
is the son of a preacher man…

Great country song here — could even see Glen Campbell
singing it.  Lauderdale, a Statesville,
North Carolina native, released two albums
at the same time last year, which may explain why his new stuff went under the
radar.

"Stairway to Heaven"
Rodrigo y Gabriella
Rodrigo y Gabriela
(Rubyworks)

Seriously – but how many times have we heard this song?  To no surprise, the duo of Rodrigo y
Gabriella have done what other bands have failed to do – provide a fresh
perspective on one of rock n’ roll’s greatest anthems.  Every song I have heard by this duo has not
let me down.
